Ishmael Randall-Weeks b. 1976

Overview
Ishmael Randall-Weeks (b. 1976, Cusco, Peru) works across installation, sculpture, video and works on paper, exploring themes of urbanization, transformation, regeneration, collapse and nomadic existence. His practice often involves the alteration of found and recycled materials, including books, metal, tires, architectural fragments and environmental debris, which he transforms into sculptural objects and constructed spaces. These works frequently resemble functional structures while stripping them of their utility, questioning ideas of labour, cultural codes and the meaning of built forms. He received a BA from Bard College, New York, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at MoMA PS1, The Drawing Center, the Bronx Museum, MAC Lima and Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, and is held in collections including Albright-Knox Gallery, Deutsche Bank Collection, MALI Lima and MACRO Rome.

Biography
Ishmael Randall-Weeks' practice encompasses installations, sculpture and video to works on paper.  In these works, issues of urbanization, transformation, regeneration, escape, collapse and nomadic existence have been predominant. While the work in the drawing studio serves as a means for a more intimate exploration of these issues, the foundation of his larger scale work lies in the alteration of found and recycled materials and environmental debris, often on site (including such source materials as aged books and printed matter, empty tins, old tires, bicycles, boat parts and building construction fragments) that are often altered to create sculptural objects and architectural spaces. These works take the visual form of functional objects while stripping them of their productivity to address notions of labor and utility, forcing an examination of our understanding of culturally specific forms while simultaneously exploiting and adapting their particular codes and associations.

Randall-Weeks studied at Bard College, New York, graduating in 2000, and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2007. Working between Peru and the United States, he has developed a practice that combines architecture, archaeology and everyday materials, creating installations that reflect on systems of construction, migration and the transformation of space.

Randall-Weeks has exhibited in several solo and group exhibitions including recently: Galeria del Paseo, Manantiales, Uruguay; Nunu Fine Arts, Taipei, Taiwan (2024); Lawrie Shabibi Gallery, Dubai, UAE, (2024);  PS122 Gallery, New York, USA (2023); Galería German Kruger, ICPNA, Perú (2023); Revolver Gallery, New York, NY (2023); Mamama Espacio, Lima, Perú (2023); Revolver Galería, Buenos Aires, Argentina (2022); TOTAH, New York, NY (2022); Galería La Rebelde, Ciudad de Guatemala, Guatemala (2022); LAMB Gallery, London, United Kingdom (2022); Lawrie Shabibi Gallery, Cromwell Place, UK (2021).
