Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim b. 1962

Overview

Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim (b. 1962, Khorfakkan, UAE) is part of the first generation of contemporary artists in the United Arab Emirates, emerging in the late 1980s alongside Hassan Sharif, Abdullah Al Saadi, Hussein Sharif and Mohammed Kazem. His work is deeply rooted in a lifelong relationship with the landscape of Khorfakkan, where the Gulf of Oman meets the Hajar Mountains, and this connection to the natural environment has remained central to his practice for over three decades. Working across installation, drawing and handmade objects, Ibrahim creates forms that resemble primitive tools, bones or fragments of trees, as if unearthed from an ancient site rather than newly made, while his works on paper develop a personal visual language of repeated marks, inscriptions and abstract symbols that recall cave drawings and record the passage of time through meditative repetition. He represented the United Arab Emirates at the 2022 Venice Biennale with the installation Between Sunrise and Sunset, presented at the National Pavilion UAE, and has presented major exhibitions including Two Clouds in the Night Sky at the Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi (2025) at Sharjah Art Foundation (2018). His work is held in international collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the British Museum, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Sharjah Art Foundation; Art Jameel; Barjeel Art Foundation; and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, Doha.

Biography
Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim (b. 1962, Khorfakkan, UAE) is part of the first generation of contemporary artists in the United Arab Emirates, emerging in the late 1980s alongside Hassan Sharif, Abdullah Al Saadi, Hussein Sharif and Mohammed Kazem. He came of age as an artist in a period when the visual arts were not yet valued culturally in the UAE and were not taught in university degree programs. In 1986, when he met the late artist Hassan Sharif, a founding member of the influential Emirates Fine Art Society, Ibrahim moved from a secluded practice into a circle of artists whose friendships and collaborations formed the foundation for the creative community that defines the UAE today.

His work has been inspired by a lifelong relationship with the environment of Khorfakkan, his place of birth, with the Gulf of Oman on one side and the Hajar Mountains on the other. This deep connection to his local environment repeats itself throughout his studio work, whether through installations, drawings or handmade objects, and through the materials he has worked with for over three decades. His handmade forms resemble primitive tools, bones or parts of trees and often appear as if they have been unearthed rather than constructed, while his works on paper develop a personal language of inscriptions, lines and abstract symbols reminiscent of ancient cave drawings, marking time and memory through repetition.

In 2025, Two Clouds in the Night Sky, a solo exhibition of new and recent works, was presented at the Cultural Foundation, Abu Dhabi.

Ibrahim represented the United Arab Emirates at the 59th Venice Biennale (2022) with the large-scale installation Between Sunrise and Sunset, presented at the National Pavilion UAE and curated by Maya Allison. In March 2018, Elements, a survey of works spanning three decades, was presented at the Sharjah Art Foundation, curated by Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi.
