Marwan Bassiouni Participates in 'UNBELIEVABLE – Contemporary Art in the Spheres of Religion'

Marwan Bassiouni is participating in UNBELIEVABLE – Contemporary Art in the Spheres of Religion, on view at the Municipal Gallery, Bietigheim-Bissingen, Germany until 21 June.

Bassiouni’s photographic practice centers on views taken from داخل mosques across Europe and North America, where he positions the camera within sites of worship to frame the surrounding urban landscape. These compositions foreground the relationship between Islamic architectural space and Western civic environments, examining how visibility and perspective inform the experience of cultural and religious identity. By working with existing structures and natural sightlines, his images avoid staging, instead relying on the spatial logic of the mosque to shape each photograph.

His contribution is presented within a group exhibition that brings together eleven artists addressing religion from a range of cultural and personal positions. UNBELIEVABLE considers the continued influence of religion on contemporary life, with works spanning painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and video. Across the exhibition, artists engage with religious iconography, ritual, and architecture, as well as the shifting meanings of spiritual objects outside their original contexts.

Curated by Matthias Beckmann and Roland Stratmann, the exhibition invites a direct engagement with how religion is represented and understood today, situating Bassiouni’s work within a broader discussion on the intersection of faith, space, and contemporary visual culture.
