Hamra Abbas at Accademia Brera di Milan, Italy

Hamra Abbas will be participating in a screening programme curated by Fani Zguro at the Accademia Brera di Milan, Italy in May, 2016.

Abbas will present her 2010 video work Why Do Fake Hands Not Clap, which depicts a dozen sets of artists' hands cast in plaster captured in clapping motion, causing the casts to disintegrate as a result. The clapping creates an eerie soundtrack to represent the destructive impulses cloaked in our collective approval. The sound is not one of applause, yetit is produced by the very act of applause. It is this disconnect that produced anxiety, gripping the audience in a landscape of broked fragments scattered around.
