Ishmael Randall Weeks’ preoccupation with academia is most evident in Pupitre (todas las tierras) (School Desk – Every Land), a deconstruction of the traditional school desk that has been reproduced from a variety of fired clays sourced from different regions of the Amazon. Todas las tierras refers to Jose Maria Arguedas fifth novel, Todas las Sangres (Every Blood), which when published highlighted the racial, regional and cultural diversity of Peru and projected the danger of imperialist/capitalist penetration, and the problem of the modernization of the indigenous world. The school desk as a structure is a witness to this modernisation through the obligatory education system but is also much more than that: It is a functional object upon which so many other private and personal things take place: acts of defiance (chewing gum stuck under the desk), acts of love (inked hearts) or feelings of boredom (etched doodles).
