Two of the earliest records of Filipino craftsmanship on Piña fabric are found in the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection at The Met. These handkerchiefs, delicately embroidered with lively scenes—such as cockfighting—reflect the social and cultural narratives of their time.
One was acquired as a gift from Mrs. Frank L. Babbott in 1954, and the other from Emma Brown in 1929. Both pieces were later transferred to The Met in 2009.
In this series, Augustine Paredes traces the intricate design details of each handkerchief and prints them onto Piña silk. The printed fabrics are then ruched, pleated, and manipulated with heat, creating flattened bulges and yellowish stains that mark the passage of time.
