This work incorporates a photograph of the actress Hind Rustom (1929-2011).
Rustom was born in Alexandria, Egypt. She was a sex symbol of 1950s Egyptian cinema and starred in more than 60 films, mainly comedies, melodramas, and crime movies. She was active from the 1950s through to the early 1970s. Although not a formally trained belly dancer, Rustom did perform as such onscreen, often incorporating Latin American modes. Rustom’s career was marked by persistent tension between her typecast image and her commitment to quality performance. Although often referred to as the Egyptian “Marilyn Monroe,” Rustom’s voluptuous persona was far from the “dumb blonde,” exuding both elegance and feistiness.
