Nasr’s series of painted calligraphies on translucent parchment are enclosed in Plexiglas and the design is visible from either side, like panels of stained glass. The medium of painted parchment recalls that of Chinese shadow puppets, and the calligraphic text is found within borders with motifs drawn from the lexicon of Chinese traditional design- the blue colour giving an appearance of blue and white porcelain. This work has a repetition of the phrase “Light upon Light”, from the Quranic verse that gives the most precise visual metaphor of the Divine.
