Starting from 2006 and in response to the Israeli bombardment of Beirut in July that year, Sahmarani drew on self-consciously medieval imagery for his series Huroub (Battles), combining Christian icons, Mongol warriors and Crusaders, while also inspired by the recurrent conflicts between Arabs and Persians in medieval history as well as 20th and 21st century confilicts. Sahmarani’s anachronistic combinations of this historical imagery demonstrate the timeless and cyclical nature of violence in the region.
