This work fuses three different photographs from the archives of Frédéric Boissonnas who was documenting the work of choreographer Émile Jaques Dalcroze at the beginning of the 20th century. They are pastel drawings, derived from clay sculptures, worked into digital collages.
The Dalcrozian method encouraged musicians to better understand music through the rhythm and movement of their bodies as opposed to the abstract qualities of music theory and notation. The artist is attracted by this idea of the sense and qualities of something being transferred through different mediums, which relates to his own way of working. The students practised set moves and gestures which represented aspects of the music they would go on to play. These collages construct new narratives from these set moves exploring the potential of these gestures to give movement and life to depictions of his static sculptures.
