In the Personnages series, Afnan turned to the human figure, creating faces and characters that appear suspended between different places, eras and states of mind. Built through layered pigments and fragile, accumulated marks, some figures remain recognisably human, while others move towards abstraction and imagined forms. Often marked by a subtle sense of humour and at times approaching caricature, the works explore the face as a record of lived experience. As Afnan described, her figures seem to “wear a map of their lives on their faces,” carrying traces of memory, identity and the passage of time within their features.
