In the Ecritures works, Afnan experimented with text-like marks, inscriptions and densely layered surfaces, drawing on her longstanding interest in calligraphy, ancient manuscripts and the visual qualities of writing. Rather than forming a legible script, the markings hover between writing and image, resembling fragments of an unknown or partially erased language.
