Overview
Augustine Paredes (b. 1994, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines) is a multidisciplinary Filipino artist working across photography, painting, installation and poetry. His expanded photographic practice revolves around questioning the post-colonial identity of a Filipino in the diaspora through the appropriation of different artistic mediums, traditional materials, and historical and personal narratives. He studied Fine Arts under Prof. Haegue Yang at Hochschule für Bildende Künste–Städelschule, Frankfurt, and holds a BA in Mass Communication from Ateneo de Davao University, Philippines. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai; Museum Angewandte Kunst, Frankfurt; Delfina Foundation, London; Warehouse 421, Abu Dhabi; and the Royal Commission of AlUla, and he has undertaken residencies with MMCA Korea, AlUla Artist Residency and the Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artist Fellowship.

Biography

Augustine Paredes (b. 1994, Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines) is a multidisciplinary Filipino artist working across photography, painting, installation and poetry. His expanded photographic practice revolves around questioning the post-colonial identity of a Filipino in the diaspora through the appropriation of different artistic mediums, traditional materials, and historical and personal narratives. Through photography, textile, found materials and text, his work reflects on memory, migration, religion and cultural inheritance, often combining personal experience with historical references.


Paredes studied Fine Arts under Prof. Haegue Yang at Hochschule für Bildende Künste–Städelschule, Frankfurt (2025), and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication from Ateneo de Davao University, Philippines. Working between the Philippines, the UAE and Europe, he has developed a practice that moves between image-making, installation and writing, frequently incorporating traditional materials, craft techniques and archival elements to explore diasporic identity.

He has participated in residencies and fellowships including MMCA Korea Goyang Residency, AlUla Artist Residency, Salama bint Hamdan Emerging Artist Fellowship, Campus Art Dubai, and the International Summer School of Photography, Latvia.


As a writer, he has published several books of art and poetry, including Conversations at the End of the Universe (2020), Long Night Stands With Lonely, Lonely Boys (2021), Happy to be here to be happy (2022), The Bitter Taste of Sweetness (2022), and Slow Disco (2024). He is co-founder of Sa Tahanan Collective with curator Anna Bernice delos Reyes.


Augustine Paredes is based between Dubai and Frankfurt.
