Melehi's undulating motifs, the "waves", which are a central part of his work first appeared in 1963. The form initially referred to the new magnetic tapes that began to be used in American TV channels for video signals. Melehi always had an interest in cinema and TV - in fact it was his interest in TV that had led the young man to become an aspiring artist back in the 1950s. This, combined with his fascination with the digital symbols of these new innovations, led to the motif's incorporation into his paintings. By the 1970s Melehi's, paintings give emphasis to the the curved line, hyper-graphism and a clear chromatic palette.
